    Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare May 1st, 1938 "Stagebill" playbill from the three-week, Pre-Broadway engagement of the COLE PORTER, ROBERT KATSCHER and ROWLAND LEIGH musical "YOU NEVER KNOW" at the Grand Opera House in Chicago, Illinois. (The production would open September 21st, 1938 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City and run for only 78 performances.) ..... The musical starred CLIFTON WEBB, LUPE VELEZ and LIBBY HOLMAN and featured TOBY WING, REX O'MALLEY, CHARLES KEMPER, APRIL, GEORGE DOBBS, KATHRYN CRAWFORD and ROGER STEARNS ..... CREDITS: Music by COLE PORTER ("Anything Goes", "Red, Hot and Blue", "Leave It To Me!", "Du Barry Was a Lady", "Panama Hattie", "Something For the Boys", "Mexican Hayride", "Can-Can", "Kiss Me Kate", "Out Of This World", "Silk Stockings") and ROBERT KATSCHER; Lyrics by COLE PORTER; Book adapted by ROWLAND LEIGH from the Original Musical Play by ROBERT KATSCHER, SIEGFRIED GEYER and KARL FARKAS; Sets designed by ALBERT JOHNSON; Choreographed by ROBERT ALTON; Orchestrations by HANS SPIALEK; Directed by ROWLAND LEIGH; Produced by JOHN SHUBERT ..... DETAILS: The eight page playbill measures 6 1/2" X 9" inches and includes beautiful cover graphics, full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and wonderful vintage advertising but with the exception of the front cover, no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "By Candlelight", "Café Society", "I'll Black His Eye", "One Step Ahead of Love" and "The Waiters" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of minor creasing, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
