Description

I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This
is a rare autographed February 1966 playbill from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the CHARLES STROUSE and LEE ADAMS musical comedy "IT'S A BIRD ... IT'S A PLANE ... IT'S SUPERMAN" at the Shubert Theatre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (The production would open March 29th, 1966 at
the Alvin Theatre in New York City
and run for 129 performances.) ..... The musical starred JACK CASSIDY and featured BOB HOLIDAY as "Superman", JOAN HOTCHKIS (replaced at this performance by PATRICIA MARAND) as "Lois Lane", MICHAEL O'SULLIVAN, DON CHASTAIN, LINDA LAVIN, JOSEPH GENTRY, MICHAEL GENTRY, JERRY FUJIKAWA, JOHN SMOLKO and THE FLYING LINGS ..... Note: The front cover was signed by TV entertainer MITCH MILLER and producer/ director HAROLD PRINCE ..... CREDITS: Book by DAVID NEWMAN and ROBERT BENTON based upon the comic strip, "Superman"; Music by CHARLES STROUSE ("All American", "Annie", "Bye Bye Birdie", "Golden Boy", "Applause", "It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ... It's Superman!"); Lyrics by LEE ADAMS ("All American", "Bye Bye Birdie", "Golden Boy", "Applause", "It's a Bird ... It's a Plane ...
