I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare broadside (single page) playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the HAROLD ARLEN and JOHNNY MERCER musical "ST. LOUIS WOMAN" at the Shubert Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts beginning February 19th, 1946. (The production would open March 30th, 1946 at the Martin Beck Theatre in New York City and run for only 113 performances.) ..... The musical, which introduced the standards "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home" starred PEARL BAILEY, the NICHOLAS BROTHERS (Harold and Fayard), REX INGRAM, RUBY HILL, JUNE HAWKINS and JUANITA HALL and featured ROBERT POPE, LOUIS SHARP, ELWOOD SMITH, MERRITT SMITH, CHARLES WELCH, MAUDE RUSSELL, MILTON J. WILLIAMS, FRANK GREEN, JOSEPH EADY, YVONNE COLEMAN, HERBERT COLEMAN, LORENZO FULLER, MILTON WOOD, CREIGHTON THOMPSON, JERRY LAWS (whose role was eliminated out-of-town), ARTHUR LAWSON, ROYCE WALLACE and CARRINGTON LEWIS ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "High, Low, Jack and the Game", "A Man's Gotta Fight", "'S One Thing You Gotta Find Out Yourself", "Sow the Seed an' Reap the Harvest" and "Talkin' Glory" which were cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of minor creasing and light edge wear, this rare playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian.
