I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut song below.) ....... This is a rare four-page playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II musical "FLOWER DRUM SONG" at the Shubert Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. (The production would open December 1st, 1958 at the St. James Theatre in New York City and run for 600 performances.) ..... The ensemble cast included PAT SUZUKI, MIYOSHI UMEKI, LARRY STORCH (replaced out-of-town by LARRY BLYDEN), JUANITA HALL, KEYE LUKE, ED KENNEY and ARABELLA HONG ..... CREDITS: Music by RICHARD RODGERS; Book and Lyrics by OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (Rodgers & Hammerstein collaborated on "Oklahoma!", "Carousel", "The King and I", "Me & Juliet", "South Pacific" and "The Sound of Music" among others); Sets designed by OLIVER SMITH; Costumes designed by IRENE SHARAFF; Choreographed by CAROL HANEY; Production Staged by GENE KELLY; Produced by RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN 2nd in association with JOSEPH FIELDS ..... DETAILS: The four page playbill measures 5 1/2" X 8 3/4" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and advertising for upcoming events, but no cast photos or bios ..... CUT SONG: The list of musical numbers includes "My Best Love" which was cut out-of-town ..... CONDITION: With the exception of a diagonal fold and several tiny pin holes, this playbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard .....
